Joao Vilhena Bio

João Vilhena studied in Ar.Co, and since 1997 he has exhibited collectively  as well as individually. His works are present in national and international collections. In 1998 he begins his first series, (Suicidal Series) where he photographs the death of characters  of the literary and cinematographic universe, and the star system.
Simultaneously, through a system of dismantlement, the background of the photographs develops into monochromatic canvas, creating a dialogue among the two. Between 2002 and 2004, he begins four distinct series, (Film Series, Cityscapes, The Doors, Proj. Flanêur), where the composition of monochromatic black stains in a photograph reduces the human figure’s dimension in space, following a strategy of minimalist composition.
Thus, emerges in the series “Under the Curtain” in 2004/2005, stills inspired on classic American cinema, which, frozen in a raccord of frames, create a inexistent scene as a way to condense action. Since then, JV has presented pieces that,  recurring to photography, painting, sculpture, and the web, summon the visitor to come upon scenes of repositioning of the gaze relatively to the scale,  framing of a point of view,  and the creation of new “stagings.”
In  Portugal he works with Gallery Luis Serpa  Projects, Cristina Guerra Contemporary Art, Presença Gallery,Giefarte and in Spain is represented by Gallery Bores&Mallo.

Currently, he lives in New York.
